According to Melissa Williams, spokeswoman for the Ashville Police Department, investigators learned that 16 year-old Ashley Johnson, of Arden, who died Tuesday at a local hospital, was texting on her cell phone when the crash occurred. Authorities say Johnson’s car was going 52 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone. Investigators found a message on Johnson’s cell phone that was being typed at the time of the accident.

The driver of the pickup truck that Johnson collided with sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson died the day after the crash in a local hospital. No one will be charged in the wreck, police say.

Texting while driving became illegal in North Carolina in December.

According to officials with the Charlotte Police Department, a driver was attempting to turn left onto Tyron Street shortly before 9:00 a.m. Monday when the accident occurred. Police say another driver, in a sport utility vehicle, struck the car and then crashed into a telephone pole. The pole broke in half and the power line dangled over the car, authorities say.

The traffic lights at the intersection lost power as a result of the crash, as did a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant.

Both drivers were transported to a nearby hospital after the crash. Their conditions are not known and police could not comment on the nature of their injuries.

Emergency crews closed the inbound lanes of South Tyron Street, and police diverted traffic through a parking lot while they investigated and cleaned up the crash scene.

According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, two people were airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville and two children were transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital, after a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 17. North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.C. Copeland said 74 year-old Louis Earl Ward, of Hobbsville, was traveling south on Highway 17 in a GMC van when the accident occurred. Ward attempted to navigate a left turn onto N.C. Highway 45 and collided with a northbound 1996 Mercury driven by 30 year-old Stacy Janell-Ieshelle Riddick, of Edenton, Copeland said.

East Care airlifted Riddick’s front seat passenger, 51 year-old Dellie Mae Riddick, and rear seat passenger, 29 year-old Latisha Renee Holley, both of Edenton, to Pitt County Memorial Hospital following the crash.

Riddick’s two rear seat passengers, two year-old Kameer Holley, and three year-old Jesse Holley, were transported to Bertie Memorial Hospital by Askewville EMS.

No one involved in the crash was seriously injured.

According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 25 year-old Zachary Jeron Harville was pronounced dead Saturday at approximately 9:20 p.m., after a crash involving his 2006 Dodge Ram and two separate tractor-trailers. A passenger in Harville’s vehicle, 22 year-old Elizabeth Hill, of Morris, was transported to University Hospital in Birmingham. She was pronounced dead shortly after 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

The drivers of the two tractor-trailers, 58 year-old George Ware of Mulberry, Florida and 34 year-old Aleksanor Shaibov of Charlotte,  were not injured in the North Carolina car accident.

The crash remains under investigation.

According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 17 year-old Michael Dee Turner, of Bend of the River road, Elm City, died at Nash General Hospital after he drove through a stop sign and was struck by another vehicle. Police say Turner was driving his 1996 Chevrolet on Old Carriage Road shortly after 7:15 a.m. when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of West Mount Drive. A westbound vehicle on West Mount Drive then collided with the passengers side of Turner’s car, authorities report. Police investigators estimate the 2007 Chevrolet Suburban that struck Turner was traveling at least 50 mph when the crash occurred.

Turner, a high school junior, was on his way to take the SAT when the collision happened.

Troopers say the driver of the Suburban will not be cited in the accident.

Students at Southern Nash held and impromptu memorial service around Turner’s parking space in the high school lot. Spot 222 was filled with candles, white flowers, and homemade posters. Dozens of chalk messages covered the asphalt.

Preliminary police reports show that the accident occurred shortly after 5:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 near Little Rock Road. A sport utility vehicle rear ended a truck that was towing another vehicle on a trailer. The SUV overcorrected and careened off the road, where it was struck by a third vehicle attempting to evade the crash.

The driver of the SUV and the third car both sustained injuries in the crash. They were transported to an area hospital for treatment, police say. Authorities could not comment on the nature or extent of their injuries.

The driver of the SUV was cited by highway patrol for failure to reduce speed.

According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 23 near Old Balsam Road shortly before 11:00 p.m Monday. Troopers said 18 year-old Dakota Powell was traveling north on Highway 23 when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving, crossed over the median into the southbound lanes of the highway where he collided head-on with a car driven by 81 year-old Alice Walbert.

A preliminary accident report released by the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s Crash Investigation Unit, shows that both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is not known for either victim.

According to officials with the Ridgefield Police Department, the accident occurred shortly after 12:00 p.m. Monday on Route 53. A 78 year-old woman was a passenger in a 1994 white Jeep Cherokee which veered off the roadway and slammed head-on into a tree. The jeep rolled over, and trapped the woman in the vehicle. Response crews attempted cardopulmonary resuscitation after freeing her from the wreckage.

Police did not release the names of those involved in the accident, pending notification of their families. Sergeant Michael Libertini, with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, said investigators are still trying to determine where the 78 year-old woman lived; she had an out-of-state license and a local address.

According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 18 year-old Jesse Blackwelder was a passenger in a car that ran a stop sign and struck another vehicle at the intersection of 17th Avenue South and Grissom Parkway on March 27. Jim Allen, a traffic investigator with the Myrtle Beach Police Department, said Blackwelder was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the car. He was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center after the wreck.

The driver of the car, Justin Efird, was cited for disregarding a stop sign.

Blackwelder’s condition had seemed to be improving, according to his aunt, Trina Thomas, but he started to experience brain swelling Friday and was unresponsive Saturday morning. Another passenger in the vehicle, Lisa Grandstaff, said she was optimistic about Blackwelder’s recovery. “I thought this was going to have a happy ending,” Grandstaff said. “That we were all going to be able to meet back up.”

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Eddie Hobson, 23 year-old Jamie Walker, of Rose Carswell Road, was driving a scooter south east on Hayes Water Road Monday evening when he crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic. Walker was struck by a northeast-boud Chevrolet Blazer.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Phillips said Walker was transported to Mission Memorial Hospital after the accident. Hobson believes Walker suffered serious injury to his lower extremities.
