The Importance of Smoke Alarms

Smoke alarms often seem to be more of a nuisance than anything else. They have small but piercing lights that can interrupt sleep and they make an incredibly irritating chirp when they are low on battery power. They also seem to go off at the slightest presence of non-dangerous smoke such as when you are sautéing food.

But while it is incredibly tempting to rip smoke alarms from the wall when they start shrieking because you accidentally burned some toast, they are there to save lives and they succeed in helping to save hundreds every year.

Placement of Smoke Alarms

There are a number of requirements for the placement of fire alarms in the house that must be met by contractors of new houses or by landlords. It is not enough to have one smoke alarm in the home. There should be one in each bedroom to protect any sleeping house dwellers as well as one in every living space.

All smoke alarms should be up to date and the batteries should be routinely replaced. Although most smoke alarms will automatically create a noise when they are in need of new batteries, this should never be relied on.

Renters have a right to be protected from anything that could potentially go wrong in the house or apartment they are living in, and it is the landlord’s job to provide that protection.
