The Gym: When Health Meets Danger

Consistent gym going is a very common New Year’s Resolution. Millions of Americans are so out of shape that they are subject to serious health issues including heart attacks and type two diabetes, among many others. Because of this serious issue, exercise on a massive scale is very important. But while getting into shape by attending the gym can seriously help lower the risk of weight related disorders, the gym itself has a number of dangers to be on the lookout for.

Machines

Most gyms offer a variety of different machines to use for cardio and weight training work outs. These machines work different parts of the body and can be quite effective in obtaining certain results. But every machine should be approached with caution because an individual will never have complete control over how it functions. Some of the dangers exercise equipment can pose are:

  • Slips and falls–machines such as the elliptical and the treadmill can get slippery with sweat and thus pose a serious threat for falling. The speed of treadmills can cause exercisers to be swept several feet from the machine during a fall.
  • Pulls or fractures–it is important to never go beyond personal limits when it comes to lifting weights. If a certain machine causes any discomfort, the person using it should stop immediately.
