Gymnastics: A Dangerous Pastime for Children

Gymnastics is one of the most popular after school activities for young girls. Many young girls dream incessantly about becoming the next US gymnastics team super star and many parents dream about helping them get there. But as appealing as signing a child up for this sport may seem to both the child and the parent, certain serious dangers inherent in gymnastics should be taken into consideration before doing so.

Gymnastics Equipment

Gymnastics requires children to contort their bodies, do back flips, and swing on the uneven bars. These activities can result in:

  • stress fractures
  • torn ligaments and tendons
  • blown knees
  • bruises and broken bones
  • paralysis
  • severe head trauma and possible brain injury

While these accidents are always a possibility in gymnastics, the quality of the equipment at the gym the child attends can make these horrendous things more or less likely to happen.

Gyms should be constantly updating their equipment. Mats should cover almost every space in the gym and should be new to ensure they contain the proper amount of cushioning. No piece of equipment should show signs of rusting and they must be completely stable. Loose screws or metal connecting elements can result in tragedy.
