Consumer Product Liability
It is natural to assume that if something is sitting on the shelf in front of you asking to be bought that it must then be safe for use. But while the majority of products on the market have been tested for safety and are ok to bring back into your home, there are products that can cause:
- Serious injury–this may be in the form of a burn, electrical shock, cut, or other type of wound
- Fire–certain products can be serious fire hazards when brought into your home. This is particularly true for items such as curling irons, toaster ovens and hair dryers
- Poisoning–some products contain certain glazes or chemicals that can cause poisoning in both children and adults
Regulation of Consumer Products
The Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC, is the government agency responsible for overseeing products that are released on the market and testing them for safety. Many people who are affected by faulty consumer products are quick to point a finger at the CPSC. But while the CPSC can certainly due with more stringent guidelines and product testing, they are for the most part under-funded and faced with an unbelievable amount of work.
Hundreds of thousands of products are released in the United States each year. It is never a good idea to rely on the CPSC to properly test each of these products to the best of their ability.
