Two people were killed in a head-on collision in Waynesville on Monday afternoon.
According to officials with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the two-vehicle accident occurred on Highway 23 near Old Balsam Road shortly before 11:00 p.m Monday. Troopers said 18 year-old Dakota Powell was traveling north on Highway 23 when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving, crossed over the median into the southbound lanes of the highway where he collided head-on with a car driven by 81 year-old Alice Walbert.
A preliminary accident report released by the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s Crash Investigation Unit, shows that both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death is not known for either victim.
