A man who was killed when his SUV was struck by a Sheriff’s deputy was identified Monday.
Authorities identified the man as 40 year-old David Wayne Cox, of Statesville. Cox was traveling south on N.C. 115 in a Chevrolet Blazer shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when the accident occured. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol First Sgt. T.E. Baity, Iradell County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Byrd was attempting to stop a speeding motorcycle when “Byrd approached the intersection, [and] the SUV pulled out straight in front of him.”
Byrd’s cruiser smashed into the driver’s side door of the Blazer. Cox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cox is survived by his three daughters, a 13 year-old and 11 year-old twins.
