Trooper Injured in Alleged DWI Crash

A North Carolina State Trooper was injured when an alleged drunk driver struck his patrol car on Interstate 77 Thursday.
Investigators for the Highway Patrol said the crash occurred shortly before 11:00 a.m. while the trooper’s car was parked along the side of the road. The officer was conducting traffic observations and was struck by another vehicle from behind. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Mitch Hahn, trooper Avery Williams and the two people in the other vehicle were transported to Baptist Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the other car, Joey Hollan Tester, is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, failure to reduce speed, driving with now insurance, and driving while license restricted.

Man Identified in Fatal Crash with Sheriff’s Deputy

A man who was killed when his SUV was struck by a Sheriff’s deputy was identified Monday.
Authorities identified the man as 40 year-old David Wayne Cox, of Statesville. Cox was traveling south on N.C. 115 in a Chevrolet Blazer shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when the accident occured. According to North Carolina Highway Patrol First Sgt. T.E. Baity, Iradell County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tim Byrd was attempting to stop a speeding motorcycle when “Byrd approached the intersection, [and] the SUV pulled out straight in front of him.”
Byrd’s cruiser smashed into the driver’s side door of the Blazer. Cox was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cox is survived by his three daughters, a 13 year-old and 11 year-old twins.

$5M Settlement in Fatal Car Crash

The wife of a man who was killed by a woman who was using a cell phone while driving has agreed to a $5 million settlement.
Sharon King was driving and talking on her cell phone in 2007 when she struck and killed two bicyclists: 49 year-old Thomas Hoskins and 43 year-old Lee Anne Barry. Hoskins’ wife Sherri, 52, was pleased with the settlement, saying “It’s been a long time and difficult time… We are forever changed, my kids are fatherless.”
Dick Harpootlian, one of Hoskins’ attorneys, said “We believe the cell phone was the major cause of the crash.”
Under the terms of the settlement agreement, Hoskins will receive $3.6 million, and the remaining $1.3 million will cover legal fees.

North Carolina Car Crash Leaves Soldier in Coma

A soldier from Kennewick, North Carolina is in a coma after his car crashed into a tree.
Caleb Darling, a 23 year-old veteran of two tours in Afghanistan, has been in a coma since February 10. The soldier’s mother-in-law, Joy Bankston, said Darling’s injuries require multiple surgeries.
Darling and his wife Kathleen were en-route to Beulaville, N.C., when a teenage driver pulled out of a driveway in front of their vehicle. Swerving to avoid the car, Caleb lost control of the vehicle, left the road and slammed into a tree. The couple was transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital following the accident.
Kathleen sustained only minor injuries in the crash. “He got it all.” said Bankston. “It’s his left side that’s pretty banged up… The roof of the car caved in on the left side of his head.

Mother Injured, 2 Daughters Killed in North Carolina Car Crash

Two young sisters have died after a driver crashed into their mother’s stalled car on on an interstate in North Carolina.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, 9 year-old Mequea Spears and 5 year-old Aiysha Spears of Bennettsville were killed when a Ford Explorer rear ended their mother’s broken-down Honda Civic on Tuesday. The civic was stalled on the westbound shoulder of Interstate 85 near Mebane, North Carolina, police say.
The girls’ mother, Andrea L. Purvis, 31, and an 8 year-old child in her car were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The driver of the Explorer was treated for minor injuries at the scene of the crash. State Troopers say they do not plan to charge him.

Two Men Face Drug Charges Following Car Crash

Two men are facing drug charges following a car accident in Charleston.
According to a statement released by the Charleston Police Department, the accident occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 64 near the Greenbrier Street exit. Paramedics responded to a call about the accident and discovered a large amount of marijuana inside and outside the vehicle, police say.
The two men, 53 year-old Andres Emejia Fuentes, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and 35 year-old Jary Zallecillo Vasquez, also of Charlotte, were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The condition of the two men is unknown.

Trooper Struck by Car on I-40

An North Carolina State Highway Patrol vehicle was damaged and a trooper trapped in an accident on Interstate 40 shortly before noon on Sunday.
The accident occurred when Trooper Maynard was investigating the damage from an early wreck. According to police a car approached Maynard from the rear, lost control and struck the patrol vehicle, pinning Trooper Maynard inside.
EMT’s responded to the crash and evaluated Maynard. He refused to be transported to the hospital. Authorities say he was not injured in the accident. The status of the driver in the other car is unknown, but charges are pending.
